BACTEX Mupirocin Ointment is a topical antibacterial agent, active against those organisms responsible for the majority of skin infections, e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains, other staphylococci, and streptococci. It is used for treatment of primary and secondary skin infections due to susceptible patogens:
- primary pyoderma such as impetigo, ecthyma, folliculitis and furunculosis
- secondary infected dermatoses such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, epidermolysis bullosa,
- minor infected traumatic lesions such as ulcers, burns, cuts, abrasions, lacerations, wounds and surgical incisions
Indications: treatment of primary and secondary skin infections due to susceptible patogens
Side effects: during clinical studies some minor adverse effects localised to the area of application were seen such as burning, stinging and itching.
Precautions: when Bactex Ointment is used on the face, care should be taken to avoid the eyes. Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed from open wounds and damaged skin and excreted by the kidneys in common withother polyethylene glycol based ointment. Bactex Ointment should be used with caution if there is evidence of moderate or severe renal impairment.
Contraindications: hypersensitivity to BACTEX or other ointment containing polyethylene glycols. This BACTEX Ointment formulation is not suitable for opthalmic or intra-nasal use.
Use in pregnancy: there is inadequate evidence of safety to recommend the use of BACTEX during pregnancy
Use and dosage: adults and children – applied to the affected area three times daily, if improvement is not seen within 3 – 5 days, consult physician
