Folic acid 5 mg containing the active substance of folic acid 5 mg is a B vitamin. Sometimes also called as vitamin B9, vitamin M, vitamin Bc or pteroyl-L-glutamic acid, and pteroyl-L-glutamate. Vitamin B9 is essential for the synthesis of nucleic acids, for haematogenesis and it is of particular importance for normal growth and development of the fetus. Not only pregnant women but also women planning pregnancy and women taking hormonal contraceptives should increase daily intake of vitamin B9. Moreover, it was proved that folic acid plays an important role in controlling and reducing the levels of homocysteine, which is a major factor in the development of civilization diseases. Homocysteine lowering treatment method is practiced for more then 20 years and during this time it was verified that it is not necessary to die from heart attacks and cancer, or worry about migraines, depression, inflammation of the veins, Alzheimer’s and other civilization diseases. The reduction of homocysteine levels is reached using folic acid in combination with vitamins B6 and B12.
Folic acid deficiency causes megaloblastic anemia. Red blood cells are enlarged, distorted, and their ability to carry oxygen is limited. Also, it can disturb the growth of human embryo and cause infertility.
Vitamin B9 is contained mainly in leafy vegetables. Good sources are also yeast and liver. Cooking however destroy up to 95% of folic acid. Experts therefore recommend taking folic acid in vitamin supplements, where absorption into the body is up to 100%. Absorbency of vitamin B9 received in food is about 50%.
